Golf Plus offers more car for less cash

The Volkswagen Golf Plus is based on the popular Golf, but is roomier.

It hasn’t been a strong seller in the UK, and discounts are often easier to come by than on other mediumsized Volkswagens.

It is also possible to find pre-registered models showing only delivery mileage with significant savings over list price.

We found a 1.9 TDI Luna model at a Volkswagen dealer on a 08-registration plate with an asking price of £12,990.

The list price of this 90bhp model is £15,185, but if you factor in the metallic paint finish, the total saving is in excess of £2500. The Luna specification includes air conditioningand alloy wheels.

Used Astra is a competent all-rounder

The 2004 Astra is a great all-round family car. It’s well-built, has a good choice of engines and there are plenty around which helps keep prices low.

The earliest models with more or less average mileage on the clock are around the £4000 mark.

We found a 1.4 Life model at £4000 that comes with electric windows, electrically-adjustable and heated door mirrors, a system that helps maximise braking effort during emergency stops and a CD/radio.

It is also possible to find higher specification models with more equipment for a little more cash.
